Library
Matches from Project GutenbergOpen a book to read it in a full-width reading view: the HTML edition where one exists, otherwise the plain-text edition, otherwise its Gutenberg page.
Coverage and further pages
Coverage and next page are printed above exactly as Project Gutenberg reported them — never re-counted here. Coverage is the total number of matches at the source; when next page is empty, this shelf is every match. When next page has a value, more results exist at the source than are shown here.
How this works
- 1 · Search
- Your words are matched against titles, authors and subjects in the Project Gutenberg catalogue, filtered to the language code you gave.
- 2 · Browse
- Every match becomes a card on the Library tab: plain title, author(s), language, and how many times it has been downloaded.
- 3 · Read
- Opening a card loads that book's
text/htmledition in a single scrolling column with generous line-height. If the HTML edition is missing, the plain-text edition is used; if neither exists, the book's Gutenberg page opens instead.
Questions
Are the books really free?
Yes. Everything here is public domain in the United States and distributed at no cost by Project Gutenberg. Check your own country's copyright rules before redistributing.
Why did my search return nothing?
Two common causes: a language code that the book isn't catalogued in, or a spelling the catalogue doesn't recognise. Try a broader term — an author surname or a subject word — and leave the language as en.
Are the reading display settings kept?
No. Text size and light/dark reading mode apply to the book you are reading right now, in this browser session only. Nothing about your reading is stored.
Where do the numbers come from?
Download counts, the coverage total and the next-page marker are printed exactly as the Project Gutenberg catalogue returns them, together with the source status of the request.
